Do you guys sell Air Horns?

"I need an air horn for my bike, or something crazy loud like that to save my ass from the crazy buses and cars in SF. what do you guys have?"

We've thought about selling airhorns, but decided against it for two reasons:

1. Air horns aren't cool. They send out the message that bicyclists are disgruntled. They are absolutely the wrong thing to use for pedestrians. You'll need an Incredibell for that.

2. Yelling "Hey!" at the top of your lungs is faster, just as loud, cheaper, more reliable, and always ready. It has saved me many times. I can yell "Hey!" about as fast as I can perceive a threat. "Hey!" always penetrates automotive glass. When people hear you hell "Hey!", they know it's coming from a human being. When people hear the blast of an air horn, they don't know where it's coming from. This may make yelling "Hey!" more effective at getting a driver's immediate attention. "Hey!" can be followed by "Thanks" if a driver yields, or something harsher if they don't. An air horn only does one thing. If you don't keep the Air Horn pumped up, it won't work. That's one more thing to remember to do before each ride. Yelling "Hey!" requires no preparation.

3. Using an air horn requires taking one of your two hands off the handlebars, precisely where you need them in a tense moment. Yelling "Hey!" doesn't.

Some people just want an airhorn.

Here's what the questioner had to say about our response on air horns:

"Thanks for responding. but i don't know that you really considered my question. i appreciate your concern for the way peds perceive cyclists, but i'm not looking to blast peds with a horn. peds aren't the problem; i see them and they see me. there's a reason cabbies call us "donorcycles". i'm not looking to harsh anyone's day, but i'd rather piss off 10 pedestrians than end up at sf general with a plate in my head. whether or not that's "cool."

Thanks John, but did you read the next point? What about yelling "Hey!" at the top of your lungs? Have you tried it? It's remarkably effective.

Yours, Paul

--- Sure did, paul. i don't think yelling "hey" reaches into a semi cab. or a bus. or someone with their stereo up.

Also, another point in favor of yelling "Hey" is that it doesn't require taking one of your two hands off the handlebars, precisely where you need them in a tense moment. But here's a link if you're set on the air horn...

And yup, i know i 'd have to custom-fab a mount so i can engage it with hands on the grips. thanks for the link.
