Does my Xtracycle fit on public transportation?

Does my Xtracycle fit on public transportation?

Yes, many public transport bike accomodations options are flexible enough to handle a Sport Utility Bicycle. Keep in mind that the Xtracycle is the same width as a 'regular' bike and only 15" longer. Some public transport services have length limits that you will no doubt learn about the hard way. But in our experience, on Bay Area services such as BART, Bay Bridge Bike Shuttle, Capitol Corridor Amtrak, and many buses, the answer is yes.

One Bay Area transit service that has repeatedly hassled us and other Xtracycle customers is Caltrain. Conductors here may tell you that your bike is too long (80 inches is the limit). But in our experience, an Xtracycle is only a few inches longer, and unless you're getting on at the peak of the commute, enforcing this rule is basically a power trip on the conductor's part. Rather than arguing, we suggest taking off your front wheel and placing it in the FreeLoader IF the conductor complains. Don't bother doing this prior to getting on the train as conductors are not likely to complain every time.
