Will the Mothership Cabinet have good bass response?
Achieving satisfying bass response is a major challenge for bicycle customizers. Let's review some of the factors that go into bass response:
- Size of the cabinet. The number of cubic inches of your cabinet makes a huge difference in the efficiency of your speakers and the bass response. In bicycle audio, there's a compromise between going big for bass response, and making a sleek, attractive shape. With the Mothership, we have gone just big enough to get good bass from 6" subwoofers or 6x9" full-range speakers, while keeping a unique and stunning shape.
- Quality of construction of the cabinet. If the cabinet is not airtight, or the walls are too thin, the amplifier's energy will be lost in unwanted vibrations. The mothership's cabinet is flawless. The seals are completely airtight. The curved shape allows us to use less fiberglass than we'd have to use on a rectalinear cabinet, while still being thick enough to offer tight bass response.
- Ported vs. Sealed cabinet. Ported cabinets have the potential for improved bass response. However, installing a port requires doing precise calculations of the woofer's electromagnetic properties, the volume of the cabinet, and the the port length. You can install a port in your mothership cabinet if you're willing to do these calculations. Or you can use it sealed for a more worry free installation.
